Positive Behaviour Support (PBS)
What is Positive Behaviour Support?
Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is a person-centred approach to guiding and understanding behaviour to encourage new ways for students to behave. It’s all about building up our students in a positive and meaningful way.
PBS emphasises understanding the reasons behind a child’s behaviour and then using proactive strategies to support positive change. Over time, through the PBS program, positive behaviour will become more inherent for students.
What does PBS look like at Harrisdale PS?
At Harrisdale PS we have five different PBS values that we teach our students. At Harrisdale PS we show:
- Respect
- Responsibility
- Excellence
- Safety
- Resilience
These expectations are brought to life through our Harrisdale Herons. They’re names are as follows:
- Ricky Respect
- Robbie Responsibility
- Ellie Excellence
- Sammy Safety
- Rio Resilience
Each week, students who have received PBS tokens for displaying the PBS values have their names drawn out of a hat to receive a PBS wristband. These wristbands are labelled with our PBS values of respect, resilience, responsibility, safety and excellence. Two of our Year 6 leaders collate all of the winner’s names and call them out during the morning announcements before handing the wristbands out to the students.
Students who display the PBS values also have the opportunity to receive a PBS merit certificate, presented by their classroom teacher.
Harrisdale PS PBS Matrix
Students at Harrisdale PS learn about our PBS expectations during an allocated time each afternoon. We have created a PBS Matrix which gives further insight into our PBS values and what these look like in the classroom, school grounds and online.
We encourage our Harrisdale PS families to use the same expectations and targeted behaviours at home.
